MPS Hosts Oklahoma's First 12+ COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic

(Mustang, Oklahoma – May 13, 2021) – On Thursday, May 13, 2021, Mustang Public Schools partnered with Total Wellness-Oklahoma to host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for individuals age twelve or above with or without comorbidities using the authorized Pfizer vaccine. The clinic was originally scheduled as a second dose clinic for those who were vaccinated at Mustang’s April 22 clinic (which was open to anyone sixteen or older), but the District was able to expand the scope of the clinic on Wednesday to the 12-15 year old age group based on the new authorization.

“This is the first clinic for 12+ in the State,” Mustang’s Lead Nurse Tammy Kain said. “We were planning as if this would happen, and we are excited to offer this for our students and families.” Volunteers checked each person who entered the MHS Event Center and asked them a series of screening questions and verified their insurance, before directing them to a holding hallway where they waited on spots marked off in six foot increments for an available nurse to administer the vaccination.  After each person received their shot, they were directed to a waiting area to be monitored for 15-30 minutes before leaving through a separate exit.

“A large part of what we saw last year was an impact to education and schools,” Oklahoma’s Deputy Commissioner of Health Keith Reed said in a press conference on Thursday.  “We are excited to be able to offer [the COVID-19] vaccine to this group of individuals to eliminate or at least greatly reduce interruptions to academics and social development and to help them get back to some semblance of normalcy.”

“We are, again, glad to be able to host this event, and help in the efforts to curb this global pandemic,” MPS Superintendent Charles Bradley said. “We expect to give approximately 220 first or second shots by the end of the day, and we’re thankful to Total Wellness for partnering with us on this.  This is just another step toward helping us open school safely in August.”

The District will not be offering a second dose clinic for those receiving the first dose today, but the vaccines should be widely available at local pharmacies and through the State Portal when these individuals would need a second dose in mid-June  (21 days from today).
